The diverse Adani Portfolio firms, Ambuja Cements and ACC, are the first cement companies in India to have the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) approve their net-zero ambitions. Adani’s Ambuja Cements and ACC achieve net-zero targets, joining global leaders such as Cemex, Heidelberg, and Holcim with this milestone.
The only internationally accepted framework for aligning corporate net-zero goals with climate science is the SBTi’s Corporate Net-Zero Standard. According to the Adani Group, this validation reflects the company’s commitment to responsible and sustainable business practices, choosing necessity over convenience.
This recognition places Ambuja Cements and ACC at the forefront of India’s industrial decarbonization. The companies are committed to cutting emissions at the speed and scale required to achieve the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C target.
Strategy and Industry Leadership in Climate Action
Vinod Bahety, CEO of the Adani Group’s cement division, stated that the company takes pride in its long-standing leadership in environmental initiatives. He emphasized that SBTi approval further confirms their dedication to growth alongside ecological accountability.
He also pointed out that Ambuja Cements and ACC are among the largest cement manufacturers worldwide to have earned such validation. The companies have consistently led the industry’s transition to sustainable practices and recognize the urgency of meaningful emission reductions.
In line with SBTi standards, the companies will focus on reducing emissions directly and offsetting residual emissions. Their efforts will prioritize green energy, alternative fuels and raw materials (AFR), efficiency measures, and technological innovation.
Synergies with Adani Group’s Green Energy Vision
Ambuja participates in the World Economic Forum’s Transitioning Industrial Clusters initiative and is the first cement company internationally to join the Alliance for Industry Decarbonization (AFID), led by IRENA.
Synergies within the Adani Group are crucial to achieving these climate goals. The Group has committed USD 100 billion toward India’s green energy transition, with plans to scale up renewable energy capacity from 14.2 GW to 50 GW by 2030.
Ambuja Cements aims to meet 60% of its power needs through renewables by FY28. This includes 1 GW of solar and wind capacity, and 376 MW of waste heat recovery systems (WHRS). The company has already reached 299 MW of solar/wind and 186 MW of WHRS capacity.
Adani’s Ambuja Cements and ACC achieve net-zero targets by supporting green hydrogen development, which is expected to play a central role in the decarbonization pathway. The Group’s investment in this space will accelerate the transition and reduce dependency on fossil fuels.
