India’s electric vehicle sales share is expected to reach 10-12% in FY27 as the country’s transition to cleaner mobility gathers momentum, according to a new report by India Ratings and Research (Ind-Ra). The ratings agency estimates that electric vehicles (EVs) will account for 10-12% of total vehicle sales in FY27, up from 8.5% in FY26, reflecting growing consumer acceptance and improving economics of electrification. The report highlights that electric two-wheelers will remain the primary growth driver, while passenger vehicles, three-wheelers, and buses are also expected to witness rising adoption.

Lower operating costs, expanding product choices, government support, and improving charging infrastructure are accelerating India’s shift toward electric mobility, although challenges remain in long-distance transport and domestic manufacturing.

Electric Two-Wheelers to Lead EV Growth

Ind-Ra expects electric two-wheelers (E2Ws) to remain the fastest-growing segment in FY27.

  • EV penetration in the two-wheeler category is projected to increase to 8-10%, compared to 6.6% in FY26.
  • The report attributes this growth to affordable running costs, convenient home charging, and a wider range of electric models being introduced by established automobile manufacturers.
  • With two-wheelers accounting for the majority of vehicle sales in India, this segment is expected to play a pivotal role in expanding the country’s EV ecosystem.

Passenger EV Market Set for Strong Expansion

The passenger vehicle segment is also likely to witness robust growth, albeit from a relatively small base.

According to the report, India’s electric vehicle sales share is expected to reach 10-12% in FY27, supported by rising adoption of electric passenger cars, with penetration projected to grow from 4.4% in FY26 to 6-8% in FY27.

The launch of new electric models across multiple price segments is expected to improve consumer choice and boost market demand.

Electric Three-Wheelers Continue to Dominate

Electric three-wheelers remain India’s most electrified vehicle category.

  • Ind-Ra forecasts penetration in this segment to increase from 59% in FY26 to 62-65% in FY27.
  • Attractive operating economics for commercial operators, lower fuel expenses, and continued government incentives are expected to sustain strong growth.
  • Electric buses are also projected to gain momentum, with penetration rising from 4.37% to 6-8% during FY27.
  • However, the report notes that wider deployment will depend on charging infrastructure and readiness across state transport undertakings.

Urban Consumers to Drive Adoption

The ratings agency expects EV adoption to remain concentrated in metropolitan cities and among higher-income consumers, where ownership economics are more favourable.

Shruti Saboo, Director – Corporates at Ind-Ra, said the Indian EV market continues to demonstrate healthy long-term growth potential, supported by improving ownership costs, stronger use-case economics, expanding vehicle portfolios, and rising consumer confidence.

She added that the next phase of EV growth will depend on strengthening India’s domestic value chain, particularly battery manufacturing and related technologies, while expanding charging infrastructure and reducing reliance on imports.

India’s EV market is entering a broader growth phase as consumers increasingly embrace electric mobility across multiple vehicle segments. While two-wheelers and commercial three-wheelers continue to lead the transition, expanding model availability, supportive government policies, and investments in charging infrastructure are expected to accelerate adoption further.

However, experts believe sustained growth will depend on building a robust domestic EV supply chain, improving battery production capabilities, and addressing infrastructure gaps to support India’s long-term clean mobility ambitions.
