US electricity demand is set to hit record levels by 2027 as the rapid growth of Artificial Intelligence (AI), cryptocurrency operations, and widespread electrification continues to reshape the country’s energy landscape. According to the latest U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) outlook, electricity consumption is expected to rise for the third consecutive year after reaching a record 4,195 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) in 2025. The agency projects total power demand will increase to 4,269 billion kWh in 2026 and further to 4,399 billion kWh in 2027.

The surge reflects soaring electricity needs from AI-powered data centers, digital infrastructure, and expanding electrification across homes and businesses, highlighting the growing pressure on the U.S. power grid while accelerating the transition toward cleaner energy sources.

AI Data Centers Are Driving Electricity Growth

The EIA attributes much of the projected increase to the rapid expansion of AI data centers and cryptocurrency facilities, both of which require enormous amounts of electricity to operate high-performance computing systems around the clock.

At the same time, increasing electrification, including the adoption of electric vehicles, electric heating systems, and digital technologies, is adding further demand across the economy.

Experts say AI has become one of the fastest-growing sources of electricity consumption, with major technology companies investing billions of dollars in new data centers to support generative AI services and cloud computing.

Commercial Power Use Set to Overtake Residential Demand

  • One of the report’s most notable findings is that commercial electricity consumption is expected to exceed residential demand for the first time on record.
  • Power sales to commercial customers are forecast to reach 1,550 billion kWh in 2026, while residential electricity sales are expected to decline slightly to 1,508 billion kWh.
  • Industrial electricity consumption is projected to reach 1,065 billion kWh.

This shift reflects the increasing concentration of energy-intensive businesses, particularly data centers, office campuses, cloud infrastructure, and digital services that now consume enormous amounts of electricity.

Renewable Energy Continues to Expand

While US electricity demand is set to hit record levels by 2027, raising concerns about grid reliability, the energy mix is also continuing to evolve.

According to the EIA:

  • Renewable energy will increase its share of electricity generation from 24% in 2025 to 25% in 2026, reaching 27% in 2027.
  • Natural gas will remain the country’s largest source of electricity, supplying 40% of total generation through 2027.
  • Nuclear energy will continue to provide 18% of electricity generation over the forecast period.
  • Coal’s contribution is expected to decline from 17% in 2025 to 15% in both 2026 and 2027.

The growing share of renewables reflects continued investment in solar and wind power, which are becoming increasingly important for meeting rising electricity demand while reducing carbon emissions.

Natural Gas Remains a Key Part of the Energy Mix

Despite rapid growth in renewable energy, natural gas is expected to remain essential for balancing electricity supply.

  • The EIA forecasts natural gas consumption for electricity generation will reach 36.6 billion cubic feet per day (bcfd) in 2026, just below the record 36.8 bcfd recorded in 2024.
  • Meanwhile, industrial natural gas demand is projected to climb to 24.0 bcfd, surpassing the previous record of 23.8 bcfd, which had stood since 1973.

Growing Demand Highlights Future Energy Challenges

The EIA’s latest forecast underscores how quickly the U.S. energy landscape is changing. As AI adoption accelerates and digital infrastructure expands, electricity demand is expected to reach unusual levels, placing greater emphasis on grid modernization, reliable energy supplies, and investment in cleaner power generation.

Meeting future demand will require a balanced mix of renewable energy, natural gas, nuclear power, energy storage, and upgraded transmission networks. With AI expected to become an even larger part of the economy in the coming years, ensuring a resilient and sustainable electricity system will be critical for supporting innovation while maintaining energy security.
