Indian paleontologists have found a fascinating fossil of a big predator snake called Vasuki indicus. It is considered to be 10–15 meters long, comparable to the largest snake ever found. The fossilized remnants discovered in Gujarat’s Panandhro Lignite Mine in Kutch are from the Middle Eocene, 47 million years ago. This fossil of Vasuki Indicus giant snake unearthed in India, is a member of the extinct Madtsoiidae snake family named after the legendary serpent associated with Lord Shiva, and provides new information about the evolution of snakes. This discovery highlights the importance of India’s prehistoric biodiversity and its involvement in the global distribution of snakes. A Colossal Relic of the Eocene Era

The fossil of the Vasuki indicus giant snake unearthed in India appears to have a broad, cylindrical body based on its 27 well-preserved vertebrae, which measure 37.5-62.7 mm in length and 62.4-111.4 mm in breadth. Its estimated length of 10.9–15.2 meters puts it on par with the notorious Titanoboa, a prominent predator after the extinction of the dinosaurs. It surpasses the record of 10 meters set by the reticulated python. Given its size and the warm climate (around 28°C), Vasuki probably ambushed prey like contemporary pythons and anacondas. Understanding the origins of snakes requires understanding the Madtsoiidae family, which spans the Upper Cretaceous to Late Pleistocene. This discovery shows how high Eocene temperatures may have fuelled the evolution of such huge sizes. The discovery also charts a biogeographical route from southern Eurasia, from the Indian subcontinent to Africa.

Implications for Future Research and Palaeontology

This finding clarifies Gondwanan intercontinental dispersal and has important ramifications for Madtsoiid biogeography. Although size estimations are still uncertain, the fossil’s anatomical traits indicate Vasuki had a powerful presence, according to the experts. Its presence during a warm tropical epoch supports hypotheses about how climate affects body size evolution. India’s significance in this subject is further supported by earlier Madtsoiidae discoveries, such as the 2022 finding in the late Oligocene strata of Ladakh. To improve Madtsoid classification and biogeography and enhance our knowledge of these extinct giants, the team recommends more sampling of Late Cretaceous and Paleogene Gondwanan sites to find new materials and taxa.

In addition to being captivating because of its immense size, the discovery of Vasuki indicus fills in gaps in the snake’s evolutionary history. Each discovery like this one promises to reveal more about the prehistoric world and its enormous inhabitants as paleontologists comb through India’s fossil-rich terrain.
