For the first time, India surpasses the US in solar growth to become the world’s second-largest market for annual solar capacity additions, according to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). The update, based on the latest International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) report, shows India added over 37 GW of solar capacity in 2025, slightly ahead of the US, which added 34 GW, while China continues to dominate with a massive 315 GW addition in the same year.

Behind these numbers is a much larger story of how quickly India’s energy landscape is changing. In just one year, India’s total installed solar capacity rose from 98.5 GW to 135.5 GW, reflecting how rapidly projects are moving from planning to execution across states.

A Fast-Climbing Solar Curve

The growth becomes even more striking when seen over time. India’s solar expansion has picked up speed in a way few expected a decade ago.

  • From just 2.7 GW in 2014, it took nearly eight years to reach the 50 GW mark. But after that, momentum really took off, capacity doubled to 100 GW in just three years, and then surged past 150 GW in barely over a year.
  • In comparison, the US also expanded its solar base, growing from 177.6 GW to 211.6 GW, but India’s pace of addition has been more aggressive in recent years.
  • Globally, solar energy is now scaling faster than ever, with 512 GW added in 2025 alone, pushing total worldwide capacity to 2,392 GW.

India’s Growing Role in Global Clean Energy

The shift is not just about capacity, it’s also about output.

  • India had overtaken Japan as the world’s third-largest solar power producer, generating 108,494 GWh of electricity in 2025, ahead of Japan’s 96,459 GWh.

What makes this more significant is how quickly India has built this position.

  • According to the ministry, FY26 alone saw a record 44.6 GW of solar additions, almost double the previous year’s 23.8 GW.

Policy Push and Ground Reality

Officials say this growth momentum is not accidental. Union Minister Pralhad Joshi credited strong policy support, better infrastructure, and rising investor confidence for the surge. The focus has been on scaling up domestic manufacturing, easing project approvals, and strengthening grid integration so that new solar capacity can be absorbed efficiently.

Industry leaders also see this as a turning point. Experts from the National Solar Energy Federation of India have noted that India’s progress reflects long-term planning rather than short-term gains, with renewable energy now becoming central to both industrial growth and energy security.

A Bigger Shift in the Energy Story

What stands out in this transition is not just the scale, but the speed. Few countries have managed to expand their renewable base so rapidly while also increasing industrial demand and electricity consumption.

With this milestone, India surpasses the US in solar growth, becoming the second-largest market globally and marking a shift in how the global clean energy map is shaping up. And for India, it signals something even bigger: a future where solar is no longer an alternative, but a core pillar of growth.
