Ørsted cleared to resume Revolution Wind project by federal judge in Washington, D.C, coming after a recent suspension order by the administration. The judge’s ruling is a win for the Danish energy company and its partners, as it allows them to move forward with one of the country’s most developed renewable energy projects. Crews can now resume the final installation phases in preparation for commercial operation.

Judge Blocks Trump’s Suspension Order

Judge Royce Lamberth of the U.S. District Court ruled that the Interior Department’s suspension of the $5 billion Revolution Wind project in December 2025 was not justified. He stated that halting construction would cause irreparable harm to Ørsted and its partner, Skyborn Renewables. The judge’s order prevents the current administration from enforcing the suspension while the legal challenge is ongoing.

The administration had stopped work on Revolution Wind, along with four other offshore wind projects, citing national security concerns related to offshore wind activities. The judge, though, concluded that the government did not adequately explain its reasons for halting construction.

Project Status and Economic Implications

Revolution Wind, located about 15 miles off the coasts of Rhode Island and Massachusetts, was about 87% complete when work was halted, and was expected to provide renewable energy to many homes in Rhode Island and Connecticut this year. With the court’s decision, construction can restart immediately, with safety as the main focus.

Ørsted’s case argues that the suspension violated federal administrative procedure laws because the government did not provide enough notice or a valid reason for stopping the project, which had already undergone extensive review. The court’s decision highlights that federal agencies must follow proper procedures when changing decisions that affect infrastructure development.

Energy and Environmental Significance

Revolution Wind is a key part of regional renewable energy plans to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and expand clean power capacity. The project, with its turbines in federal waters, represents the intersection of climate goals, energy policy, and federal regulatory power. Its continuation supports broader efforts to reduce carbon emissions.

This case is part of a larger series of legal disputes involving offshore wind developers and state governments seeking to overturn similar suspensions on wind leases and projects along the East Coast. Future hearings will decide whether preliminary orders are granted for other halted projects, which will affect the speed of offshore renewable energy progress in the U.S.
