Experts say to be prepared for a strong El Niño is possible by summer 2026. Atmospheric and ocean conditions in the tropical Pacific are signaling a quick change from the current La Niña pattern, with big consequences for the weather around the world and local climates. New information and predictions suggest that the El Niño phase of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) might show up between May and July of next year, and it could be a moderate to strong one.

Strong El Niño Possible by Summer 2026

Rapid Transition from La Niña to El Niño

Scientists watching the equatorial Pacific say that the current La Niña conditions, which mean cooler-than-usual sea temperatures, are fading faster than expected. They’re pointing to early bursts of westerly winds and changes in Pacific wind patterns as signs that the ENSO cycle is swinging toward El Niño. By most accounts, this switch could be complete by summer in the northern hemisphere, with El Niño conditions well established by mid-2026.

While some atmospheric scientists don’t think this El Niño will cause a huge jump in global temperatures like the 2023-24 event did, the warming of the equatorial Pacific will still raise surface temperatures and affect weather everywhere.

How El Niño Impacts Global Weather and Climate

El Niño is known for changing global air circulation, and when it happens, warmer Pacific waters can bring more rainfall to some areas while reducing it in others. In the past, El Niño events have been tied to droughts in parts of Asia and the Indian subcontinent, especially affecting monsoon seasons and heavier rainfall in places like the eastern Pacific and the southern United States.

Even if the 2026 event isn’t as strong as the most intense El Niños we’ve seen, it could still mess with rainfall patterns in countries that rely on monsoons, like India, cutting down on rain during important farming seasons.

Expert Warnings and Uncertainties

This potential El Niño is coming at a time when the world is already unusually warm. The three years from 2023 to 2025 have broken many monthly and yearly temperature records, partly because of the aftereffects of the 2023-24 El Niño and fewer aerosols in the atmosphere. Climate scientists think that global average temperatures could stay high in 2026 and 2027, especially if El Niño gets stronger.

While there’s growing confidence that El Niño is on its way, some things are still uncertain, as some researchers point out that not all climate models agree on how strong the event will be or how long it will last. A strong El Niño is possible by summer 2026 and can greatly affect global climate patterns. Scientists are seeing signs of development and caution, which could greatly affect local weather extremes.
