A strong spring storm brought unprecedented weather to parts of New South Wales and Queensland, resulting in severe power outages, devastation, and widespread public anxiety. Overnight, Eastern Australia was hit by giant hail as the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) confirmed hailstones measuring up to 14 cm in Brisbane, large enough to smash roofs, shatter car windshields and destroy solar panels. In addition, the storm overwhelmed emergency services and energy suppliers with its 100 kph gusts, over 800,000 lightning strikes, and severe rainfall. Residents in the area were advised to prepare for another day of unstable weather, as more than 95,000 homes lost power and additional powerful storms were forecast.

Unprecedented Power Outages and Hail

In addition to shocking the residents, the devastating hailstorm provided unique meteorological insights into harsh spring conditions. Locals shared pictures of huge hailstones on social media, some weighing close to 190 grams. The incident brought attention to the severity of the weather system that was sweeping the coast and the region’s infrastructure’s vulnerability. As Eastern Australia was hit by giant hail, the impacts were immediate and far-reaching.

Key effects:

  • Hailstones up to 14 cm in size damaged solar panels, automobiles, and roofs.
  • Trees were felled, and winds of up to 100 kph downed lines.
  • According to Energex, more than 95,000 houses lost power.
  • More than 800,000 lightning strikes disrupted infrastructure.

According to Senior Meteorologist Miriam Bradbury, the likelihood of severe storms persisted on Tuesday due to atmospheric conditions similar to those of the day before. She did point out that if the system steadily deteriorated, the possibility of enormous hail might be “a little bit reduced.”

Warnings, Heatwaves and Continuing Storm Risks

Weather officials cautioned that the area remained in danger even as locals assessed the damage from the night before. Storm formation in northeastern New South Wales and southeast Queensland was further fueled by high humidity, intense heat, and erratic air masses. In the meantime, a fierce heatwave posed a different but no less serious threat to northern Queensland.

Current weather alerts:

  • NSW and Queensland are still under severe storm warnings.
  • In northern Queensland, maximum temperatures are expected to exceed 40°C.
  • Heatwave conditions may significantly tax emergency services and electrical systems.
  • Locals are urged to be on the lookout for hail, torrential rain, and strong gusts.

With temperatures rising beyond 40°C, the BoM’s extreme heatwave advisory adds another layer to the developing weather disaster. Communities already reeling from the devastation of the night before found themselves in a dangerous environment amid intense heat and storm activity.

The incident was unusual for many residents. One local posted a picture of a 10-cm hailstone that weighed more than 188 grams, writing, “I’ve never seen such a large hailstone here before.” Their astonishment captured the sentiment across the region as Eastern Australia was hit by giant hail for the second consecutive day, an alarming reminder of the increasing volatility of spring weather systems across the continent.
