Temperatures above 40°C (104°F) are causing dozens of Wildfires to blaze across Southern Europe, struggling with a dangerous heatwave. Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, and the Balkans are all under red heat advisories, which pose serious health hazards. As fires rage and endanger homes, tourist destinations, and cultural landmarks like Spain’s Unesco-listed Las Médulas, thousands have been evacuated. Scientists blame the hotter, drier Mediterranean summers caused by global warming for these worsening conditions. Emergency services are overburdened, fighting fires amid intense heat and strong winds in places like Greece’s burned-out islands and Spain’s sweltering plains. More difficulties are anticipated in the days ahead.

Wildfires Blaze Across Southern Europe: Devastating Impacts

Temperatures in Seville and Cordoba, Spain, could reach 44°C (111.2°F), which would intensify wildfires blazing across Southern Europe that killed an employee of an equestrian center in Tres Cantos, close to Madrid, where winds of 70 km/h pushed flames toward residences. Thirty fires threatened the historic Las Médulas monument, forcing nearly 4,000 people to evacuate in Castile and Leon. Two thousand people were evacuated from the tourist regions of Tarifa in Andalusia.

A large fire near Trancoso was put out by Portuguese firefighters with the help of 1,300 people and Moroccan aircraft, while temperatures in the south are still as high as 44°C. A four-year-old boy in Sardinia, Italy, passed away from heatstroke, and ten cities were on red alert. More than 150 wildfires are burning in Greece, and many people are being evacuated from Zakynthos and Achaia because the fires are “out of control.”

Emergency Responses and Safety Measures

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez emphasized the “extreme risk” of wildfires, leading to the deployment of about 1,000 troops to fight fires throughout Spain, especially in Andalusia and Castile and Leon, where hundreds have been evacuated. As temperatures in the Rhône Valley rise to 40°C, hospitals in France are bracing for more patients as three-quarters of the nation is under a heat alert. Greece is asking for EU firefighting assistance to control out-of-control fires in Zakynthos and Achaia as it fights more than 150 wildfires with 5,000 firefighters and dozens of aircraft.

While Montenegro lamented the loss of a soldier when a water tanker capsized close to Podgorica during firefighting operations, Turkey was able to contain significant fires in Canakkale and Izmir following evacuations. After grassfires destroyed 17 acres in London, the UK issued amber and yellow heat alerts. To reduce the risk of fires and excessive heat, authorities around the region advise citizens to safeguard their properties, remain indoors, and stay informed about warnings.
