In the deep forests of southern Chile and Argentina, there is a race against time to save one of the world’s most endangered amphibians, Darwin’s frog (Rhinoderma darwinii). Known for unusual reproductive behavior, which involves males transporting tadpoles in their vocal sac until they reach maturity. The strange amphibian, which was first observed by Charles Darwin in 1834, is considered endangered on the IUCN Red List. There are only 62 known populations left, and the species is being pushed to the brink by habitat loss, climate change, invasive predators, and a deadly fungal disease.

A Disappearing Habitat
Darwin’s frogs depend on moist, mossy forest floors in temperate regions. However, rapid deforestation for farming, logging, and urbanization has destroyed much of their native habitat, especially in Chile’s La Araucanía, Los Ríos, and Los Lagos regions. Replacement of native forests with non-native tree plantations has fragmented critical ecosystems.
On top of this, climate change is altering rainfall patterns and temperatures, making these forests less habitable. Invasive species like the American mink further threaten frogs by preying on them. But the most catastrophic blow has come from chytridiomycosis, a fungal disease caused by Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis. In 2023, an outbreak in Tantauco Park led to a devastating 90% population drop, wiping out over 1,300 frogs.

A United Front for Conservation
With help from NGOs and global partners, Chile’s government is stepping up. A new public-private conservation program launched on July 29, 2025, focuses on protecting breeding habitats and collaborating with private landowners. It is an extension of the Binational Conservation Strategy for Darwin’s Frogs, which was initiated in 2018 by 30 organizations from Argentina, Chile, and other countries. The strategy outlines 39 actions to be completed by 2028, targeting habitat restoration, threat reduction, and stronger public support.
Ex-situ conservation is also a key component. In October 2024, 53 healthy frogs were rescued from Tantauco Park and relocated to a secure facility at London Zoo. By February 2025, 33 froglets had hatched, an essential step in preserving the species. Chile’s National Zoo and the University of Concepción are also running breeding programs.
The good news is that a further population of 68 Darwin’s frogs was recently found in March by the Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park. This discovery highlights the significance of protected areas and raises new hope for conservationists.

Looking Forward
Hurdles remain, including the continued spread of chytrid fungus and climate stressors stemming from global warming, but there has been momentum in efforts to save this endangered Darwin’s frog species. The global collaboration of scientists, governments, and zoos offers hope that the decline will be reversed. People involvement, habitat conservation, and disease control are three important aspects of this strategy.
But saving this small amphibian is not just about the preservation of a single species; it has become a symbol for urgent action to conserve biodiversity in endangered ecosystems.
