Once-thriving rice fields throughout Africa are turning yellow, an indication of an expanding disaster caused by the Rice Yellow Mottle Virus (RYMV). Farmers are uncertain as the deadly rice virus threatens Africa’s food security. The virus has been destroying supplies for more than a century. The origins and quick spread of the virus have been clarified by a recent genome study published on June 17, 2025, in the open-access journal PLOS Pathogens. This highlights the critical necessity to safeguard the continent’s food supply. The stakes are higher than ever as rice replaces maize as a significant food in many areas, necessitating strong efforts to stop this threat.
Tracing the Virus’s Spread
335 viral samples that were gathered over 770,000 square kilometers in East Africa between 1966 and 2020 were examined by the study, which was headed by Eugénie Hébrard of the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD, France) and an international team. According to genetic data, RYMV first appeared in Tanzania’s Eastern Arc Mountains, a hotspot for biodiversity where slash-and-burn rice production first appeared around the middle of the 1800s. The deadly rice virus threatens Africa’s food security and spreads from wild grasses to neighboring rice fields, particularly in Morogoro and the Kilombero Valley. By the 1970s, it had spread to Lake Victoria and Madagascar thanks to human activity such as commercial routes, colonial movements, and transportation during times of war. This historical spread demonstrates how uncontrolled seed movement and inadequate biosecurity have increased the virus’s reach.

Challenges and Solutions Ahead
Fragile farming safety procedures exacerbate the virus’s spread, especially in unstable or war-torn areas where disease surveillance is inadequate. The issue is worsened by fluctuating crop seasons and changing weather patterns, which allow RYMV to spread across various farmlands. Because of its versatility and short cooking time, rice is becoming increasingly popular, which has a more profound nutritional and economic impact. The report urges the creation of resistant rice varieties, stringent seed quarantine regulations, and regional genomic surveillance as immediate actions. To defend Africa’s food security, it promotes a change from reactive crisis management to proactive protection, emphasizing improved biosecurity, prioritized surveillance, and resilient crop variants.
This catastrophe necessitates a quick response to save rice ecosystems and the livelihoods that depend on them. Biosecurity must be strengthened, and research must be funded to stop RYMV’s spread. Since rice is now a staple food in many African diets, inactivity could have disastrous effects and jeopardize not only agriculture but also the continent’s stability.
