Fossil fuel burning, encompassing the combustion of coal, oil, and natural gas, powers much of the modern world but comes with severe environmental consequences. Solutions to Mitigate the Impact of Fossil Fuel Burning

1. Transition to Renewable Energy

It is imperative to switch to renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and hydropower. With solar and wind power rising from 0.2% to a record 13.4% in 2023, renewable energy sources have grown from 19% to over 30% of the world’s electricity since 2000. Clean energy subsidies and the phase-out of fossil fuel subsidies, which amounted to $7 trillion worldwide in 2023, are two ways that governments might hasten this shift. Cleaner practices are encouraged by carbon pricing mechanisms like taxes or cap-and-trade schemes. The European Union’s Emissions Trading System, for instance, reduced emissions by 35% in covered sectors since 2005.
