A Dwindling Population Under Threat
Ocelots were hunted extensively during the fur trade in the early 20th century for their stunning coats, drastically reducing their numbers across the US, where they were listed as endangered in 1982.
Human encroachment—urban sprawl, agriculture, and roadways—has destroyed the thorn scrub habitat ocelots rely on, with vehicle collisions now a leading cause of death.
Only two breeding populations remain in South Texas, on private lands like the East Foundation’s 200,000-acre ranch, totaling fewer than 100 cats, isolated from larger populations in Mexico and South America.

Scientists’ High-Tech Rescue Mission
Researchers like Bill Swanson (Cincinnati Zoo) and Ashley Reeves (East Foundation) have been using artificial insemination (AI) and in vitro fertilization (IVF) to breed ocelots, combining wild sperm with captive or wild females since 2021.
Of 13 AI attempts and 4 IVF procedures, none have succeeded due to poor sperm quality from inbreeding, environmental stress (e.g., drought), and low motility after freezing; ocelots naturally produce just one kitten per year, slowing recovery.
In December 2024, at Texas State Aquarium, two eggs from a 5-year-old ocelot, Milla, failed to develop into embryos after IVF, highlighting the difficulty of these techniques.
A Future for Ocelots?
By late 2025, a Kingsville, Texas, center will open to house ocelots, provide medical care, and train young cats to hunt, aiding their return to the wild.
Saving ocelots preserves South Texas’s thorn scrub ecosystem, supporting biodiversity and species like bobcats and rare birds, which are vital for ecological balance.
Scientists will trap wild males this spring for sperm collection, resuming fertility efforts in fall 2025, hoping to overcome setbacks and boost the population.
