Reiterating the Centre’s dedication to wildlife protection, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed Madhav National Park‘s designation as India’s 58th Tiger Reserve and Madhya Pradesh’s ninth on Sunday.

PM Modi took to X to declare it “amazing news for wildlife lovers,” highlighting the country’s vast biodiversity and wildlife conservation culture. He restated the government’s commitment to preserving wildlife and promoting environmental sustainability.

The announcement was also made by Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav, who said, “58th roar and counting! India continues to make significant progress in protecting the environment and conserving animals, with a longstanding focus on reestablishing biological diversity.” He praised forest officials for their unwavering dedication to safeguarding the nation’s fauna.

Madhav Tiger Reserve: Location and Significance

The Shivpuri district in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior-Chambal region is home to the recently established Madhav Tiger Reserve. Its 1,751 square kilometers are divided between a 1,276 square kilometer buffer zone and a 375 square kilometer core area.

Madhya Pradesh, which is known as the “Tiger State” because it is home to the largest population of tigers in India, continues to step up its conservation initiatives. With the addition of the Madhav Tiger Reserve, the state now has nine Tiger Reserves.

Five tigers, including two newly born cubs, are now housed in the reserve. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav also hinted that two additional tigers would soon be released into the reserve. He emphasized the state’s ongoing initiatives to support ecotourism and animal conservation.

Conservation Efforts and Future Plans

Madhav Tiger Reserve was established after Ratapani Wildlife Sanctuary‘s recent designation as Madhya Pradesh’s eighth tiger reserve. This increase demonstrates the shared goal of the central government and state government to improve wildlife protection.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav thanked Prime Minister Modi for spearheading the expansion of tiger protection efforts. Additionally, he praised Madhya Pradesh’s citizens, describing the development as a proud moment for the state.

A larger effort to restore and maintain tiger numbers in the area includes India’s 58th Tiger Reserve, the Madhav Tiger Reserve. In 2023, a reintroduction initiative brought three tigers—two of which were females—back to the park. In the upcoming years, authorities hope to boost tiger conservation initiatives and improve the habitat even more.
