One of the main contributors to climate change is methane, a colourless, odourless, and volatile gas. It traps 25 times as much heat in the atmosphere as carbon dioxide, another greenhouse gas that is produced in enormous quantities in cities. Furthermore, methane has the potential to contribute to the production of ground-level ozone, which is harmful to people, particularly those who smoke. Hyderabad emerged as India’s top methane-emitting city, surpassing Delhi, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, and Jaipur. A November 2024 study in Urban Climate found that Hyderabad has the highest methane concentrations regularly, indicating an increasing environmental problem.

The TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument on NASA’s Copernicus Sentinel-5 Precursor satellite provided the data for the study, which showed a consistent increase in methane levels from about 1,880 parts per billion (PPB) in 2019 to a peak of about 1,970 PPB in 2023.

Sources of Methane Emissions in Hyderabad

The main causes of Hyderabad’s methane problem include waste management concerns, industrial operations, and insufficient methane monitoring and control. The eutrophied Hussainsagar Lake, the heavily polluted Musi River, and the enormous Jawaharnagar landfill are the city’s main sources of methane.

Experts point out that a variety of sources, including landfills, water bodies, and flooded areas, contribute to methane emissions. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) zones of Rajendranagar, Falaknuma, Mehdipatnam, Charminar, Karwan, Jubilee Hills, Khairatabad, and Yousufguda are the ones with the highest methane emissions.

Methane fluctuations in the city’s suburb of Shadnagar were the subject of a different investigation carried out in 2023 by the National Remote Sensing Centre in Hyderabad. Hyderabad emerged as India’s top methane-emitting city due to consistently rising methane levels, indicating that the issue extends beyond the city limits and affects nearby regions as well.

Comparison with Other Indian Cities

The study examined methane levels in five Indian cities from 2019 to 2023: Hyderabad, Jaipur, Bengaluru, Delhi, and Ahmedabad. It identified clear regional trends by classifying methane concentrations according to patterns of land use and land cover. Methane levels were continuously highest in Hyderabad, followed by Delhi, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, and Jaipur.

Ahmedabad and Jaipur experience high methane output from poor waste management and landfill emissions, whereas Delhi’s high methane emissions are mostly caused by industrial operations and vehicle emissions. Bengaluru, which is well-known for its fast urbanization, faces challenges related to methane production from a variety of sources. Methane emissions in Jaipur were strongly correlated with wind patterns and land surface temperature.

Policy and Regulatory Measures

Hyderabad’s current methane reduction regulatory framework is inadequate. The issue is made worse by the absence of comprehensive methane monitoring, which makes it challenging to monitor emissions and implement effective regulations. In order to control urban methane emissions, municipal organizations are essential, especially when it comes to enhancing waste management procedures.

Although there are government programs and policies in place, enforcement is still quite difficult. Hyderabad emerged as India’s top methane-emitting city partly due to the lack of stringent enforcement, which allows emissions to continue rising unchecked. Without strict regulatory limits, methane levels will keep increasing, making the metropolis more vulnerable to climate change.
