An “extremely dangerous” Category 4 storm, Hurricane Beryl, moved rapidly across the Atlantic Ocean on Sunday night. It is heading towards the Caribbean’s Windward Islands, where it is expected to bring life-threatening winds and flash flooding on Monday. The U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) issued a warning, emphasizing the storm’s severity.

As the first hurricane of the 2024 season, Beryl was about 150 miles (240 km) southeast of Barbados on Sunday night. The storm consisted of maximum sustained winds of 130 mph (215 kph), according to an advisory from the NHC. “Beryl is expected to remain an extremely dangerous major hurricane as its core moves through the Windward Islands into the eastern Caribbean,” the NHC stated.
Impacts on the Windward Islands
The center of Hurricane Beryl is predicted to pass through the Windward Islands on Monday morning as a Category 4 storm. This level is the second-strongest on the five-step scale. The NHC warned of “potentially catastrophic wind damage” in areas such as St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Grenada.
It is unusual for a major hurricane to form so early in the Atlantic hurricane season. It generally spans from June 1 to November 30. On Sunday, Beryl became the earliest Category 4 hurricane on record, surpassing Hurricane Dennis, which reached Category 4 status on July 8, 2005.
Hurricane warnings have been issued for multiple areas. Meanwhile, a tropical storm watch is in place for Dominica, Trinidad, and parts of the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Authorities and residents in these regions are making preparations for the storm’s arrival.
Preparations and Expected Rainfall
In Tobago, officials have opened shelters, closed schools for Monday, and canceled elective surgeries in hospitals. These steps are more like initiatives to make sure residents stay safe and secure.
The NHC forecasts that Hurricane Beryl will bring 3 to 6 inches of rain across Barbados and the Windward Islands throughout Monday. This heavy rainfall can lead to serious floods in many areas. This is more like a danger for vulnerable areas.
Residents are expected to stay informed and follow the necessary guidance of local authorities to stay safe during the hurricane. As Hurricane Beryl still affects the area, people are advised to stay alert.
